Meet the Asset Management Team: Phil Wellington

Tell us about your role as Portfolio Manager.

I’m a Portfolio Manager at PortfolioMetrix, and that gets me involved with lots of things. One day I might be meeting with a fund manager, crunching performance numbers in a spreadsheet, or pitching a fund idea to our investment committee. And some days, I’m on the road talking about our process and portfolios to existing and prospective adviser partners. But every day, I’m keeping an eye on what’s going on in markets, the impact that is having on portfolios and ensuring that all of our portfolios continue to be managed in-line with clients’ expectations.

What attracted you to PortfolioMetrix, and what keeps you motivated to stay?

I was initially attracted to PortfolioMetrix as a great place to combine a couple of passions of mine – financial markets and helping people. Ultimately building suitable investment portfolios to help investors achieve their financial goals. From day 1, it was clear that everyone at PortfolioMetrix made it a great place to work and that has continued to be the case – spending a reasonable portion of your day with people you enjoy learning from, can help develop and can enjoy the company of is a great formula for motivation and success.

How do you like to spend your time when you’re not at work?

I largely spend my ‘free time’ with my family. I have 2 young daughters, who are whisked around London to lots of after-school/weekend clubs, competitions and fun activities (the youngest, at 16 months, mostly comes along for the ride) - it makes for a proud dad and helps me get my steps in! It’s helpful that another thing I like to do in my spare time doesn’t clash too much with that – watching American sports, often at nocturnal hours, accompanied by our lovely cat! Pre-kids (and hopefully again once they are older), I enjoyed travelling around a lot and kept myself active with lots of racket sports, including being a fully qualified tennis coach.

What do you like the most about PortfolioMetrix

What I enjoy about PortfolioMetrix is that there is always something to learn from everyone. Whether that is learning from our tech team about the details of how our systems work, speaking with advisers to learn about what is at the top of clients’ minds, hearing from fund managers about the latest developments in markets, debating our investment views amongst the investment committee, or socialising with the team after work over a game of padel and learning how competitive everyone is!
